Renovation of primary schools, Lupane District
Failed land distribution reforms starting in 1997, and failed economic policy led to hyperinflation that has devastated Zimbabwe’s economy and agriculture. The situation is especially fragile in the poor rural areas. The Lupane district is one of the poorest areas in the country, and has for political reasons been neglected by government. Rural Districts and local School Development Committees are in charge of buildings and other infrastructure for the primary schools. However, lack of funds and resources have resulted in damaged and inadequate facilities, affecting primary education of children in the rural districts.
EWB-DK has teamed up with Care4People (a Danish charitable organization) and Sweco Denmark to renovate one primary school in the Lupane District. The joint project improves the infrastructure in two phases. First phase is the upgrading of all existing infrastructure to a renovated and maintained standard, and implementation of plans for operation and maintenance. The second phase improves infrastructure at the school with additional buildings, and access to water facilities to run a vegetable garden, and cook basic meals for the children.
The project contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals regarding quality education (#4) and partnerships for the goals (#17).
